2005

Winemaking

Spontaneous fermentation, 50% using “Fuder” barrels.

 Why Vinolok™

Like many wineries at the time, Weingut Kerpen was keen to avoid a recurrence of the waste of their hard work. The solution was to select a novel closure that had been developed specifically to meet the needs of those winemakers who were looking for a technical closure that would be neutral and inert. However, they were unwilling to compromise on the quality of the closure, as they felt that consumers should be able to discern the value, compared to other types of closures.

About

Johnson Estate, a family-owned Century Farm and winery with 110 acres of vineyards, produces award-winning wines from thirteen varieties of grapes. As NYS’ oldest estate winery, established in 1961, its vineyard practices are wholly integrated into the production of its wines. Their wines range from dry European classics to sweet American wines, as well as ice and fortified wines.

Beginning

In 2004, Martin Kerpen made the decision to switch to glass closures for his wine bottles, after experiencing issues with TCA and inconsistent cork quality, which resulted in some of his wine being spoiled.

Experience

The glass closure is now a standard feature of the top-quality wines produced by Weingut Kerpen. The closure has been well-received by consumers, and helps to maintain the wine in optimal condition.

Preserving the integrity of my wine is paramount. Natural corks, while steeped in tradition, can sometimes impart unwanted flavours to the wine. This is why I choose Vinolok™ glass closures. These closures maintain the purity of the wine, ensuring that its true character shines through without any interference. Using glass closures allows me to share the wine exactly as I intended it to be experienced – pure and unadulterated.Vinolok™ closures are not only elegant and beautiful, but also robust, ensuring consistent oxygen transfer, which is essential for proper wine ageing.
